No. 11 UConn Tops Yale 5-2
Oct. 1, 2003
Lauren Henderson and Kelly Stolle scored two goals each as 11th-ranked UConn beat Yale 5-2 at Johnson Field.
Stolle got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at 24:35 of the first. The Bulldogs actually had shots hit the goalpost twice in the early going, denying them a potential 2-0 lead. UConn increased its lead to 2-0 on Henderson's first goal, coming off a penalty corner at 17:17. Henderson added another at 5:27. Yale gained some momentum heading into halftime when Elizabeth Topp scored on a Sarah Driscoll assist off a penalty corner with just 41 seconds left in the half.
UConn increased its lead to 4-1 on a Becky Helwig goal at 13:50 of the second, but the Bulldogs pulled closer just over five minutes later. After a Meredith Hudson shot on a penalty corner, and a rebound attempt by Fran Gardner, Jana Halfon was able to slip one past Huskies goalie Maureen Butler to pull Yale within two. But UConn added another goal by Stolle less than two minutes later to put the game out of reach.
"Unfortunately, we hit two posts, or we could have been up 2-0," noted Yale head coach Ainslee Lamb. "That could have been a momentum shift."
The loss comes after a successful two-win weekend for Yale; the Bulldogs now have another week before their next game.
"Playing UConn helps prepare us for the rest of our schedule," Lamb said. "It's just another learning opportunity, and now we've got to take it and do something with it."
Yale returns to action next Wednesday, hosting Quinnipiac at 7:00.
