Senior midfielder Rachel Lentz scored two goals in her last game at Johnson Field to lead the Bulldogs to a 4-2 victory over Columbia in Ivy League action on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
"She does her job very well," head coach Pam Stuper said of Lentz. "She gets herself in position to score goals and knows where to go."
Yale junior Harriet Thayer opened up the game's scoring just under 10 minutes in when she collected a rebound in front of the net and fired it past Columbia goalie Gena Miller.
The Bulldogs (4-12, 3-3 Ivy) took a 2-0 lead with five minutes to play in the first half when Lentz took a feed from Thayer and put it into the back of the net.
Columbia (7-9, 1-5 Ivy) got to within a goal at 2-1 at the 27:52 mark of the second half. Christine Buszczak tipped a pass from Jacqui Munro past Yale senior keeper Elizabeth Friedlander.
Yale regained a two-goal advantage thanks to Lentz's second tally of the game. After freshman Katie Cantore's shot in front of the net was knocked away by Miller, Lentz was there to knock the rebound in.
Columbia made the game interesting when Elizabeth Reeve scored off an assist from Ramie Merrill with 7:26 remaining. However, Yale's defense held strong the rest of the game to clinch the victory.
"Columbia is a scrappy team," said Stuper. "If you breathe a little life into them, they run with it. Emily's goal helped prevent that."
Friedlander made nine saves in net to earn the victory for Yale, while Miller turned away six shots for the Lions.
Before the game, the Bulldogs honored their seven player senior class: Lentz, Orrico, Palilonis, Friedlander, Lindsay Collins, Jenn Slough and Allison Spitzer for their accomplishments and contributions to the program. All seven ended the game on the field for the win.
"The team made it memorable for them," Stuper said. "All seven played well and had a great effort in their final home game."
The Bulldogs will look to close the 2006 campaign on a winning note when they travel to Brown next Saturday, Nov. 4. The game will begin at Noon.
