NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The first varsity athletic contest of the 2006-07 school year takes place Friday at 3:00, as the Yale field hockey team hosts VCU (1-1) at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs fell to the Rams in Richmond last year 4-2 despite holding a 22-12 advantage in shots.
Captain Heather Orrico (Southbury, Conn.) had one of Yale's two goals against the Rams last year, scoring on a penalty corner in the second half. Orrico will once again be a key part of Yale's offense. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Friedlander (Milwaukee, Wisc.) played the second half of last year's game, allowing just one goal in 35 minutes while making two saves.
VCU fell to No. 9 UConn 3-1 in its season opener last Saturday, but bounced back with a 7-3 victory over Monmouth the next day. Three Rams have two goals on the year entering Friday's game: Ashley Cadwallader, Nikki Lloyd and Emilie Osinga. Goalkeeper Laura Baker has a .684 save percentage and 3.88 goals-against average in 139:01.
Yale opened last season with a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart at Johnson Field in Pam Stuper's first game as head coach.
