No. 15 Princeton and Lock Haven in Town this Weekend
Sept. 25, 2008
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale field hockey team faces perhaps its toughest set of back-to-back games this weekend at Johnson Field. No. 15 Princeton (Saturday, Noon, GameTracker) and Lock Haven (Sunday, 1:00 p.m., GameTracker) are a combined 12-3 this year and were NCAA Tournament participants last season.
Yale (2-3, 0-1 Ivy League) dropped its Ivy League opener last Saturday at Harvard, adding a sense of urgency to Saturday's showdown with Princeton. The Tigers, who opened Ivy play with a 4-0 win over Dartmouth, have won the last three Ivy League championships. They have 14 titles since 1991 and 16 overall.
The Bulldogs were one of only six teams to hold Princeton to two goals or fewer last season, but Yale was unable to find the back of the net and fell 2-0. Junior goalkeeper Charlotte Goins (New Bern, N.C.) made 13 saves. Yale had only eight shots in the game, including two from junior forward Ashley McCauley (Rye, N.Y.). McCauley had three goals in Yale's most recent game, a 6-1 win over Sacred Heart, and has taken over the team lead in scoring (4-0-8).
Princeton (5-1, 1-0 Ivy League) posted an impressive 3-2 win at Penn State Wednesday, and its lone loss was by one goal (3-2) in overtime at UConn two weeks ago. The Tigers are led by freshman forward Kathleen Sharkey, who has a team-best five goals. Freshman midfielder Katie Reinprecht leads the team in points (4-4-12). Her sister, Sarah, is a senior midfielder for the Tigers and is a two-time All-Ivy selection.
Lock Haven (7-2), which plays at Fairfield Saturday afternoon, was among the teams receiving votes in the latest national poll. The Lady Eagles have won four straight Northeast Conference regular season championships and back-to-back NEC tournament championships, earning a pair of NCAA tournament appearances.
Senior midfielder Blair Wynne, an All-American last year, has a team-best 26 points (11-4-26). 2007 NEC Rookie of the Year Amy Hordendorf, a senior back, was second with 22 points (10-2-22).
