Victory Sets Stage For Season Ahead
HANOVER, N.H. — Heading to the Sept. 15-16 Dartmouth Invitational, the Yale women's golf team knew it wanted to get its season off to a good start. It did that—and more—in claiming victory Sunday at the Hanover Country Club event, establishing a strong foundation for the three remaining fall tournaments.
Sophomore Shreya Ghei led the way for the Bulldogs, finishing the Hanover, N.H. tournament with an one-under par total to win the individual title. Her performance was just one of several outstanding efforts that powered the Yale women's team to a 295 overall score on Sunday, well placed on top of the leaderboard, 15 strokes ahead of second-place Boston. In addition to Ghei, four other golfers on the Yale team made the top-ten: sophomore Marika Liu, sophomore Caroline Rouse, junior Seo Hee Moon, and junior Sun Gyoung Park.
Sunday's final charge brought to a successful close the Bulldogs' first tournament of the 2012-13 season. Yesterday, they finished at 303 overall, two strokes clear of second-place Boston, who finished Saturday at 305.
"I am really proud of the team," said Head Coach Chawwadee Rompothong '00. "We set a goal of shooting 288 and that is all we are focused on. We came close to meeting our goal today and I'm excited for the rest of the year."
The team will look to repeat this weekend's victory next weekend, when it returns home for the Sept. 21-23 Yale Intercollegiate at The Course at Yale. Already well placed for the season ahead, another strong performance at the Yale Intercollegiate would send a powerful signal to other collegiate golfing teams around the region.
After the Yale Intercollegiate, the team will make back-to-back weekend trips to Pennsylvania, first to compete in the Sept. 28-30 Nittany Lion Invitational at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa., and then the Oct. 20-21 Lehigh Invitational at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
