Bulldogs Compete at Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate
Season Opener in Williamsburg
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Yale women's golf team's spring campaign gets underway this weekend when it competes at the Mar. 16-18 Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
The Bulldogs have spent the past week of spring break in Florida, playing a match against No. 23 University of Central Florida and practicing on top courses around Naples, Fl.
They will now travel to Virginia for a tournament that will feature tough competition and will provide an early test for the Bulldogs. The River Course at Kingsmill Resort is a par-72 course just over 6,000 yards bordered by the James River that will challenge golfers' precision as they seek the fairway and the pin.
This year's field features 11 teams in addition to Yale: Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, IUPUI, Lehigh, Longwood, Monmouth, Navy, Radford, Sacred Heart, St. Francis and William & Mary.
At last year's iteration of the tournament, Yale finished in sixth place after battling difficult weather during the final day of competition. The rain delay reduced the tournament by a round and made it a 36-hole contest. The Bulldogs' best performer at last year's tournament was senior Seo Hee Moon, who finished in a tie for eighth place.
This year the team will begin competition buoyed by momentum from highly successful fall in which it clinched two victories and two second-place finishes. Freshmen Elisabeth Bernabe and Sandy Wongwaiwate will look particularly to continue their string of successes in the fall; Bernabe won three tournament medals while Wongwaiwate recorded two second-place finishes.
The Bulldogs will look to continue that strong form throughout the 54-hole competition in Williamsburg before they return to the northeast for the remainder of the spring. Golfers will tee off starting at 8:30 a.m. on each day of competition.
