Bernabe in Second Place at Ivies
Bulldogs in Third
SPRINGFIELD, N.J.—Playing in her first Ivy League Championship, freshman Elisabeth Bernabe fired a blistering 71 on Friday to end the day in second place. She led the way as the Yale women's golf team turned into the clubhouse in third place, with two rounds of golf remaining on the Upper Course of Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
Yale finished the sunny opening day in third place with 312, behind Harvard, on 297, and Princeton, who closed the day with 305. Bernabe's 71 puts her just one stroke behind tournament leader Anne Cheng from Harvard and four strokes clear of the four golfers tied for third place.
Fellow freshman Sandy Wongwaiwate also posted a strong opening day of golf, carding 79 to share 14th place. Junior Marika Liu is a stroke further back in a tie for 16th place, with a first round 80. Junior Shreya Ghei and senior Seo Hee Moon shot 82 and 84 to end the day in 22nd and a tie for 25th, respectively.
Yale, which has finished in the top three at every tournament this season, is well poised to make a charge in the final two rounds of competition. The Bulldogs last won the Ivy League Championship in 2011 and has finished third the last two seasons—the Crimson captured both championships.
Golfers will tee off for their second rounds starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The final round of the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday.
