NEW HAVEN, Conn. – At their annual banquet last week, the Yale women's gymnastics team announced that junior Sherry Yang will serve as captain for the upcoming 2010-2011 season. Yang will be the 35th captain in the 39-year history of the program.
Yang, a native of Potomac, Md., has filled a vital role for the Bulldogs since her arrival freshman year. As a freshman, Yang was only able to compete on the uneven parallel bars due to injury, but, since then, she has competed in the vault, balance beam, and floor exercise in almost every meet.
“It's an honor to serve as captain of such a talented and motivated team,” said Yang, who was selected in a vote by her teammates. “I certainly think we have what it takes to be successful next year.”
Head coach Barbara Tonry sees Yang, the team's sole rising senior, as the source of much of this motivation, describing her positive attitude in both practice and meets as a key part of her leadership.
“As captain, Sherry will most certainly lead by example,” said Tonry. “She has the enthusiasm and energy to motivate this team toward a very successful competitive year.”
