NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a strong start to the season with a win at Springfield, the gymnastics team will host reigning Ivy Classic champions Penn at home on Saturday. The competition will mark Yale's first meeting of the season with an Ivy opponent, as well as the first home meet for the Bulldogs.
Yale is already off to a strong start, having scored 189.475 in the first meet of the season despite various team members dealing with injury and illness. Yale's roster of 13 is small in comparison to Penn's 23, but the Bulldogs have seen strong performances from freshmen, including Joyce Li and Morgan Traina, who grabbed the top two all-around spots last weekend.
Saturday will mark Penn's third meet of the season, and the second against an Ivy opponent. The Quakers beat Rutgers last weekend 191.975-191.925 and placed third at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational two weekends ago, beating out Ivy rival Cornell with a team total of 189.025.
Last year, Yale fell to Penn at a dual meet hosted by the Quakers, 187.2-181.0. Penn also bested Yale at the Ivy Classic, which the Quakers hosted and won, and at the ECAC Championships, in which Penn was the runner-up with a 191.175 and Yale finished seventh.
Competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Yale's John J. Lee Amphitheater.
