Gymnasts Receive Awards at End-of-Season Banquet

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Several members of Yale's gymnastics team received awards at the team's end-of-season banquet, held this past Wednesday. Freshmen Joyce Li and Morgan Traina, junior Tara Feld, and seniors Talis Trevino and captain Mia Yabut received special awards for their contributions to the team.

Feld, Li and Traina each received an Outstanding Contribution Award for their respective performance this year. Feld was a driving force on the team, competing in the all-around at all but two meets. She placed third on vault and second on beam at the Ivy Classic and scored a career-high 9.775 on beam against George Washington. She was eighth all-around at the ECAC Championships and "is on track to have the best year of her career in 2013," according to head coach Barbara Tonry.

Li made an immediate impact on the team this season, winning beam and the all-around in her rookie debut. Li went on to compete in the all-around in every meet of the season, placing second on beam at the Ivy Classic and fifth on beam and eighth in the all-around at the ECAC Championships. Li received the ECAC Rookie of the Week award twice during the season and was named to the 2012 Division I All-ECAC Second Team on the beam.

Traina also competed in the all-around at every meet of her rookie season and consistently medaled in the all-around. She won beam, placed fifth on bars, and finished third all-around at the Ivy Classic. She was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year and won the ECAC Rookie of the Week title for three consecutive weeks during the season.

Trevino was awarded the Four-Year Senior Varsity Award. Though Trevino sat out the 2012 season recovering from an ankle surgery, Tonry praised Trevino's "competitive, personality-filled floor exercise that resulted in a third-place win at the Ivy Classic in 2011." Tonry also recognized Trevino's involvement in community service at Yale and thanked her for her inspiration and cheering during the 2012 season.

Yabut was presented the Captain's Award for Leadership. According to Tonry, Yabut "was a captain that helped up stay upbeat and helped up believe we could accomplish our goals. She believed in herself enough to accomplish more in her senior year than any other previous season." Yabut contributed on vault, bars and floor in her final season and scored career-highs on all three events.

The team also recognized junior Stephanie Goldstein, who will captain the team in the 2012-2013 season. Goldstein was voted ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as Academic All-Ivy. She competed on vault, beam and floor exercise in every meet of the 2012 season and placed fifth on floor at the Ivy Classic.

Tonry and the team also acknowledged and thanked Kayleigh Fournier for her hard work in weight training the team, Natalie Gonzalez for running the home meets, athletic trainer Sun Ku for helping the team through injuries, and Amy Backus, Senior Associate Athletic Director, for her support in overseeing the team.
