NEW HAVEN, Conn. – This week, the Yale women's gymnastics team elected junior Ashley O'Connor as its captain for the 2013-14 season. O'Connor, a history of science/history of medicine major from New Milford, Conn., is Yale's only gymnast from the Nutmeg State. Despite battling injuries during her Yale career, O'Connor has been a consistent performer for the Bulldogs, especially on the balance beam.
During the 2013 season, O'Connor competed exclusively on the beam for the Bulldogs. After the early-season dual meet against Penn, she was awarded the weekly ECAC Coaches Choice Award for fighting through injuries to finish second on the beam with a 9.625. She finished the campaign in impressive fashion, scoring over 9.600 in each of the last three meets. In the penultimate meet of the season, she scored a career-best 9.725 on the beam to finish third in a dual meet with William & Mary.
During her sophomore year, O'Connor made her college debut on floor and vault. She also competed on the beam in two meets. During her freshman season, she was limited to the beam due to injury, but still managed to compete in all but two meets that year, ultimately finishing 12th at the 2010 ECAC championships with a 9.55.
