  • Gymnasts Honored With End of Year Awards

    Gymnasts Honored With End of Year Awards Several members of the Yale gymnastics team have been honored with team awards for their performances during the 2014 season. Senior and captain Ashley O'Connor, sophomore Camilla Opperman and junior Morgan Traina were all given special awards the the team's end of the season banquet.

    Traina Elected Gymnastics Captain For 2014-15 The Yale gymnastics team has elected junior Morgan Traina to be the team's captain for the 2014-15 school year. Traina, a history of science/history of medicine major from Stevenson Ranch, Calif., has been a strong all-around competitor for Yale in her three seasons in New Haven and will be a strong leader for the Bulldogs next year.

    Yale Wraps Up Season at USAGs Six members of the Yale gymnastics team competed in the USAG Collegiate National Championships semifinals on Friday in the final meet of the year for the Bulldogs. The meet was hosted by Brown. The Yale gymnasts competed individually during the team semifinal poriton of the competition.

    Gymnasts Honored With ECAC Awards Nine members of the Yale gymnastics team have been named to the ECAC All-Academic Team for their work in the classroom. In order to recieve this honor, each gymnast must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

    Yale Gymnasts Qualify for Post-Season Meets Following the completion of the team season at last weekend's ECAC championships, a number of Yale gymnasts have qualified individually for two prestigious post-season meets. Seven gymnasts qualified to compete at the USAG Collegiate Nationals and junior Morgan Traina qualified as an alternate for the NCAA Championship.

Junior Morgan Traina was named Co-Gymnast of the Week and senior captain Ashley O’Connor was picked as the winner of the Coaches’ Choice Award.

    Gymnasts Record Season High in D.C. The Yale gymnastics team traveled to the nation’s capital on Sunday to face George Washington and Towson in a spring break tri-meet. The Bulldogs produced their highest score of the season, finishing third with a score of 191.750. George Washington won the meet in their home gym, scoring 195.875, and Towson edged the Bulldogs for the second straight week, scoring 192.600 points to finish second.

    Yale Travels to Face GW, Towson The Yale gymnastics team travels to Washington, D.C., on Sunday to take on George Washington and Towson. This will be the Bulldogs’ second spring break meet after scoring a season high 191.575 in a meet with Central Michigan, Rutgers, SCSU and Towson last weekend.

The Bulldogs totaled 188.525 points, behind Penn State with 196.600 points, Western Michigan with 193.625 and Bridgeport with 193.500.

Friday’s meet will be a chance for Yale to test itself against some of the top gymnasts in the country, as Penn State was ranked 18th nationally in the most recent rankings.

    Yale Gymnastics Honored for Academic Performance Yale’s gymnastics team has once again been honored by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for its stellar academic performance. Eight Gymnasts, more than half the team, were named NACGC Scholastic All-Americans for the 2013 season. As a team, Yale was amongst the top in the country with an average GPA of 3.5315.

    Hall Of Fame Coach Barbara Tonry Honored At P&G Gymnastics Championships Hall of Fame Yale gymnastics coach Barbara Tonry was honored over the weekend during the P&G Gymnastic Championships at the XL Center in Hartford. Tonry, who was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1986, was acknowledged as part of organization’s 50th anniversary celebration.
