NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honored one member of the Yale gymnastics team in its weekly awards. Junior Jade Buford from Coppell, Texas earned ECAC Gymnast of the Week.
Buford started her third season as an all-arounder for the Bulldogs two weeks ago at Bridgeport. In the season opener, the Texas native claimed first in the all-around (38.650) competing against Bridgeport, Rutgers and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU).
The Bulldogs competed against Ivy rival Penn this past weekend, when Buford saw herself win the all-around with a score of 38.850. She started her day on vault with a score of 9.650. Buford's score was a contributing factor to Yale's impressive 48.375, posting a new vault team record. She moved to the uneven bars and received 9.700. During her balance beam routine she received a 9.775 and she finished her day on the floor exercise with a score of 9.725 to cap off her impressive performance.
"I am so proud of how hard Jade has worked returning from her shoulder surgery last season. She has come back with pure elegance one event at a time and it has showed in the past two competitions," said head coach Barbara Tonry.
"This award is quite deserved, not only because Jade has won the all-around two weeks in a row, but because she is constantly trying to better herself. She is her toughest competition and has made fantastic technical strides on an already sound technique," said assistant coach Jason Collins.
Look for her to continue her streak of strong performances as the Bulldogs compete once again at home Sunday. They will take on New Hampshire at 1 p.m. EST.
