PHILADELPHIA - In the first dual meet of the season, the Yale women's gymnastics team fell to Penn today 187.05-183.95. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs had strong individual performances on vault, beam and floor.
Team captain Sarah Peterson's absence due to injury hurt the Bulldogs on the uneven bars, their first event rotation.
"We didn't have enough time to prepare for losing Sarah," said senior Miki Seltzer. "We had to put some routines together at the last minute, including people who haven't had enough practice on bars."
However, the Bulldogs picked themselves up on vault, with Seltzer and sophomore Lauren Tatsuno tying for second with a 9.575. On the balance beam, Alina Liao turned in a solid 9.55 which allowed her to win the event. Freshman Brigitte Kivisto placed third with a 9.2. Seltzer placed second on the floor exercise with a 9.625, with Liao's 9.55 landing her third place.
Penn's Marissa Rosen won the all-around competition with a 37.825. Her teammate Stephanie Ortiz barely edged out Liao for second place, 37.050 to 36.975. Kivisto finished with a 36.475.
The Bulldogs will be competing at Southern Connecticut with Bridgeport on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 pm.
