Feb. 14, 2004
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In their final home meet of the year, the Yale women's gymnastics team fell to Rutgers Saturday afternoon, 192.250-192.725. Despite trailing after the first two events, the Bulldogs had strong performances in both balance beam and floor that kept the meet close.
Yale Captain Jamie Green (Los Angeles, CA) and freshman Suchitra Paul (Orinda, CA), along with Elizabeth Fittery of Rutgers all tied for first in all-around competition with scores of 38.475. Kathryn Fong (Brooklyn, NY) was the first event winner for Yale, placing first in bars with 9.875. Anne McPherson (Montagnola, Switzerland) placed first in the balance beam with 9.825. Paul became Yale's third first place finisher of the day after she won the floor exercise with 9.900.
"We had a tough time on the bars, so we will have to go back and concentrate on that for the future," said head coach Barbara Tonry. "However, I am ecstatic that all six of our gymnasts stayed on the balance beam and also performed well in the floor exercise. We are on our way to where we need to be and should be ready in time for Ivys."
Next Saturday the Bulldogs travel north to the University of New Hampshire Invitational which will begin at 7 p.m. Ivy League championships will take place the following Saturday at Cornell.
