Bulldogs Face Off with Cross-Town Rivals

Feb. 19, 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - This Saturday, Feb. 21, New Haven's Southern Connecticut State University is coming to Yale for the Bulldogs' second and last dual meet at home this season. It is both Senior and Youth Day. Last weekend SCSU won a quad meet at Penn, scoring a 187.200. Yale is coming off of a fourth-place finish at UNH, with a team score of 157.500.

Due to injuries, Yale was without two competitors, sophomore Sherry Yang and junior Brigitte Kivisto. However, this meant that the team didn't have the minimum five competitors on each event, which put Yale at a major disadvantage. Bars was the only event that counted five routines towards the team score; the other three were short one routine each. Both gymnasts are expected to return to the line-up this weekend.

SCSU currently has a 13-1 dual meet record thus far. The Owls' only loss was to Ithaca on Jan. 17. Yale, suffering from a limited roster of healthy gymnasts, is 5-9. Yale has won the past three meetings between the two teams. The all-around competition will be a face-off between SCSU's Justine Basley and Alina Liao, both of whom have won several meets this season.

Immediately following the competition, seniors Liao, Lauren Tatsuno, Micaline Tomeo, and Sarah Hughes will be honored. In recognition of Youth Day, the entire team will be signing autographs after the awards ceremony.

Competition starts at 1:00 p.m. in the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
