Capital District Visit Includes Games vs. RPI, Union
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The annual trip to New York's Capital District has usually been a fruitful one for the Yale women's hockey team. Since RPI officially joined ECAC Hockey on the women's side and became travel partners with Union in 2006-07, Yale is 4-1-1 when visiting the pair. This weekend Yale heads to the Empire State seeking its first conference wins.
Yale (0-4-1, 0-4-0 ECAC Hockey) swept Union last season by identical 4-0 scores. Junior forward Bray Ketchum (Greenwich, Conn.) had a hand in six of Yale's eight goals vs. the Dutchwomen, scoring four and assisting on two. Sophomore forward Aleca Hughes (Westwood, Mass.) had three assists in the two games. Sophomore Genny Ladiges (Almonte, Ont.) made 12 saves for a shutout in the first game, while junior Jackee Snikeris (Downingtown, Pa.) made 17 saves for a shutout in the second game.
The Bulldogs went 0-1-1 vs. RPI last year, as a pair of power-play goals gave the Engineers a 2-1 win in Troy despite 23 saves from Ladiges. A third-period goal by sophomore defenseman Heather Grant (Toronto, Ont.), combined with 19 saves from Snikeris, gave Yale a 1-1 tie when the two teams met later in the year at Ingalls Rink.
RPI (3-6-3, 1-2-1 ECAC Hockey) advanced all the way to the ECAC Hockey Championship game last season, its third as a member of the conference. The Engineers have been inconsistent in the early stages of 2009-10, typified by their performance last weekend: 10 goals in a 10-4 win vs. Colgate Friday, one goal in a 3-1 loss to Cornell Saturday. Defenseman Laura Gersten leads the team in points with 10, including two goals and eight assists. Sonja van der Bliek has a .897 save percentage and a 2.64 goals-against average.
Union (2-8-0, 0-4-0 ECAC Hockey) is 0-14 all-time against Yale. The Dutchwomen have gotten three points in conference play over the last two years (two ties with Quinnipiac and one with RPI). Forward Lauren Hoffman leads the team in scoring (2-5-7), while goaltender Alana Marcinko has an .898 save percentage and a 3.09 goals-against average.
