McGauley Scores First Career Goal
BURLINGTON, Vt. – A goaltending duel between Yale's Genny Ladiges and Vermont's Kelci Lanthier ended with a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Ladiges made 31 saves in her first start of the year, while Lanthier had 23 stops. Freshman forward Patricia McGauley scored her first career goal to help Yale earn the tie.
Ladiges' performance Saturday comes on the heels of a 29-save effort by senior goalie Jackee Snikeris Friday night.
"Genny played great," said Yale head coach Joakim Flygh. "She played with confidence. It's great to see we have some competitive goalies."
The two teams combined for 35 shots through the first two periods, but neither team could find the back of the net. Vermont defenseman Peggy Wakeman broke the scoreless tie 34 seconds into the third on a power play, blasting a slap shot past a screened Ladiges.
Ladiges went right back to work after that goal, stopping the next eight shots she faced – including one on a power play -- but the equalizer proved elusive for the Bulldogs. Junior forward Aleca Hughes hit the crossbar nine minutes into the third.
Yale (0-1-1) finally got the game-tying goal when sophomore forward Alyssa Zupon won a faceoff and McGauley got off a snap shot that hit Lanthier's right shoulder and bounced over her head, falling into the net behind her.
Two freshmen – McGauley and forward Jenna Ciotti -- accounted for both of Yale's goals this weekend, showing that Yale's large Class of 2014 is ready to contribute.
"The freshmen are doing very well," Flygh said. "We have five of them on our top three lines. They've got to learn on the job, and learn very quickly, and they're doing a great job with it. The work ethic is there, we just need some more time together as a group."
The Bulldogs had the best scoring chance of overtime, but Hughes' shot 30 seconds in hit the cross bar in the upper left corner. Ladiges made three saves in OT to finish with 31.
Yale opens ECAC Hockey play next Friday at Harvard.
