Aleca Hughes Named Winner of ECAC Hockey’s Mandi Schwartz Award

After Mandi Schwartz ’10 (1988-2011) was first diagnosed with cancer, her teammate Aleca Hughes ’12 (Westwood, Mass.) emerged as one of the primary advocates seeking to turn the tragic situation into a chance to help others. Even after Mandi passed away in April of 2011, Hughes kept up that battle as a leader both on and off the ice. On Thursday, her efforts were rewarded as she was selected as the winner of the ECAC Hockey award named in Mandi’s memory. The award, which recognizes the conference’s student-athlete of the year, will be presented to Hughes at a game during the 2012-13 season.

Yale Falls in Finale at No. 8 Harvard

The 2011-12 season came to an end for the Yale women’s ice hockey team at Harvard’s Bright Hockey Center Saturday afternoon, and fittingly a senior was at the center of a valiant effort. Goalie Genny Ladiges made 43 saves in the final game at Yale for her and her fellow seniors -- forward Lauren Davis, defenseman Heather Grant and forward Aleca Hughes. It was the 10th time this season Ladiges, who finished second in ECAC Hockey in saves with 849 for the season, made 40 or more saves in a game. Harvard forward Lyndsey Fry had four goals to make the difference in the game, a 4-0 Harvard victory.

Season High in Goals Not Enough for Win at Dartmouth

It was the type of offensive outburst the Yale women’s ice hockey team has been waiting for all season long, but unfortunately it came on a night when the Bulldog defense could not contain Dartmouth’s offense. The Big Green came away with a 10-5 win in a wild game at Thompson Arena Friday. The Bulldogs’ five goals, which came from four different players, were the most they scored in a game since a 5-0 win at Union Feb. 4, 2011. Junior forward Danielle Moncion led the way with a pair of tallies.

The Yale women’s ice hockey team concludes the 2011-12 season this weekend with games at Dartmouth and No. 8 Harvard. With both opponents jockeying for playoff position in the ECAC Hockey standings, the Bulldogs have a chance to play spoiler against two of their oldest rivals. Following Saturday’s game, Yale turns the page by heading to a Boston Blades game that is a fundraiser in memory of their teammate Mandi Schwartz ’10 (1988-2011).

Salute to the Yale Women's Ice Hockey Class of 2012

The best word to describe the Yale women’s hockey class of 2012 is "persevering". While that implies that the four Bulldog seniors have faced challenges in their career, it also expresses the relentless optimism and determination with which Lauren Davis, Heather Grant, Aleca Hughes and Genny Ladiges have faced and overcome them.

The Yale women’s ice hockey team paid tribute to its senior class -- forward Lauren Davis, defenseman Heather Grant, forward Aleca Hughes and goalie Genny Ladiges -- Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink in the final regular season home game. While No. 3 Cornell had too much firepower for the Bulldogs, prevailing 6-1, Ladiges provided one last round of memorable moments as she tied her career high with 47 saves. It was the ninth time this season she has surpassed the 40-save mark.

It took 65 minutes of work, but the Yale women’s hockey team finally brought a long losing streak to an end Friday night with a 1-1 overtime tie against Colgate at Ingalls Rink. Senior goaltender Genny Ladiges made 43 saves and Yale killed off five Raider power plays, including a 5-on-3 for more than 30 seconds in the third period. Sophomore forward Jackie Raines’ second-period goal was enough for the deadlock, snapping a 17-game losing skid for Yale.

Third-Period Clarkson Outburst Too Much for Bulldogs

For the second time in as many days, the Yale women’s ice hockey team entered the third period trailing by just one goal against a tough North Country foe. But unfortunately for Yale Saturday’s game at Clarkson ended much the way that Friday night’s game at St. Lawrence had -- with a flurry of goals by the opposition. The Saints scored three times in the third Friday night for a 6-2 win, and the Golden Knights scored six times Saturday for a 7-0 win.

The Yale women’s ice hockey team ended its goal-scoring drought, and twice made comebacks to tie the game Friday night at Appleton Arena, but ultimately St. Lawrence’s firepower was too much. Forward Kelly Sabatine had a hat trick to lead the Saints to a 6-2 win over the Bulldogs.
