Setback for Yale at Brown, 2-1
Dunbar Scores Lone Yale Goal
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Yale women's ice hockey team entered Saturday night's game at Brown knowing that a win would provide enough points in the ECAC Hockey standings for sole possession of the conference's eighth and final playoff spot. Facing the Bears for the second time in three nights on the heels of a 3-2 win at Ingalls Rink Thursday, the Bulldogs once again found themselves in the midst of a tight game after junior forward Ashley Dunbar's first period goal pulled Yale within 2-1 after two early Brown goals. But despite outshooting the Bears 9-3 in the final period, Yale could not get the equalizer. The Bears held on for the 2-1 win, moving one point ahead of Yale to tie Princeton for eighth in the standings.
This was the fifth one-goal loss in conference play for Yale (3-15-1, 2-9-1 ECAC Hockey), and it all resulted from one rough stretch of 18 seconds early on. Right after forward Janice Yang scored at 5:37 of the first to give Brown a 1-0 lead, forward Monica Massucci scored to make it 2-0.
The Bulldogs shut Brown out for the final 54:05 as sophomore goalie Jaimie Leonoff finished with 16 saves. Dunbar's tally at 17:35 of the first period, her first goal of the season, was assisted by sophomore forward Stephanie Mock and senior defenseman Jamie Gray.
Brown (4-12-1, 3-9-0 ECAC Hockey) killed off all five Yale power plays, including three in the third period. Bears goalie Katie Jamieson finished with 27 saves.
Yale hosts No. 4 Cornell next Friday as the start of Alumnae Weekend at Ingalls Rink. The game on Saturday vs. Colgate at 4:00 p.m. is the annual "White Out for Mandi".
