NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman forward Phoebe Staenz (Zürich, Switzerland) was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. The honor comes after Staenz scored four goals in Yale's only game of the week, a 5-1 win at Providence Friday. This is the second straight week she has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week.
Staenz scored a pair of goals in the first period Friday, including what turned out to be the game-winning goal at the 11:12 mark. She then scored again in the second period to get the hat trick, the first hat trick by a Yale player since sophomore forward Janelle Ferrara (Winthrop, Mass.) had one vs. Dartmouth Nov. 2, 2012. She got her fourth goal in the third period. The last recorded instance of a Yale player scoring four goals in a game was Jan. 26, 1982 (Reedie Field '82 vs. Wesleyan). Staenz needed just four shots on goal to accomplish the feat.
Staenz has 14 points (6-8-10) in the seven games since she returned from playing for Team Switzerland at the Smile Japan Bridgestone Blizzak Challenge in Tokyo in early November. She has taken over the team lead in assists and points (7-9-16). With 16 points in 11 games overall, she is first in the nation in goals per game among freshmen and second in the nation in points per game among freshmen.
The weekly awards for ECAC Hockey are determined by a vote of the league's coaches.
Yale is off for winter break now, and plays again Jan. 3 vs. Colgate.
