Helped Bulldogs Earn Three Points in ECAC Hockey Standings
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman forward Phoebe Staenz (Zürich, Switzerland) was honored by ECAC Hockey on Tuesday for her role in Yale's three-point weekend in a home-and-home series vs. Brown. Staenz was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after scoring one goal and adding a pair of assists.
On Friday night at Ingalls Rink, Staenz started the scoring in the first period by stealing the puck at center ice, then skating in and depositing her ninth goal of the year. The Bulldogs went on to finish with a 2-2 overtime tie against the Bears, playing in front of the NHL's St. Louis Blues as part of the "White Out for Mandi" in memory of Mandi Schwartz '10 (1988-2011).
On Saturday afternoon at Brown, Staenz had a pair of assists in the third period as Yale rallied from a 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 win.
Staenz generated a team-high 21 shots in the two games, accounting for nearly 25 percent of Yale's shot total. She leads Yale in goals (9), assists (14) and points (23) for the season, and has at least one point in 11 of the last 13 games she has played.
Staenz is eighth in the nation in assists per game and 10th in points per game; she leads the nation in points per game among rookies.
This was the sixth ECAC Hockey award of the season for Staenz, who has been selected to play for Switzerland at the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She was ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for December and has now earned five weekly honors (four Rookie of the Week Honors and one Player of the Week honor).
The weekly ECAC Hockey awards are determined by a vote of the league's coaches.
Yale plays at No. 6 Cornell Friday night.
