Yip-Chuck Named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month

Freshman Helped Bulldogs Earn First Playoff Berth Since 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman forward Krista Yip-Chuck (Whitby, Ont.), who helped the Yale women's ice hockey team to its first ECAC Hockey playoff appearance since 2008, was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for February on Thursday. Yip-Chuck was second on the team in goals and points, and tied for second in assists, for the month (3-4-7).

February was a memorable month for both Yip-Chuck and the Bulldogs, as they clinched their first playoff appearance in six years with a 5-3 win at Princeton Feb. 15 and then won their first playoff game since 2005 by beating No. 6 Harvard 3-2 in double overtime of game one of the ECAC Hockey tournament quarterfinals Feb. 28. The Bulldogs' season eventually came to an end this past Sunday, when Harvard won game three of the quarterfinals to take the series two games to one.

Yip-Chuck, who finished tied for second on the team in goals for the season with 10 and finished fourth on the team in points with 17, had goals in three straight games in February. That included a power play goal in the 3-3 overtime tie at then-No. 10 Quinnipiac Feb. 14. She also scored in the win at Princeton, and had two assists and a +5 rating in that game. She was second on the team in shots for the month with 22 and incurred just one penalty in eight games.

Yip-Chuck is one of many building blocks in place as the Bulldogs plan for the future. The team scored 51 goals in ECAC Hockey games this year -- the most since 2006-07, when the team scored 72 goals in conference games. Of those 51 goals in conference games this year, 48 came from juniors, sophomores and freshmen -- meaning that the Bulldogs have more goals returning next year than all but two ECAC Hockey teams (Cornell has 58 goals returning from this year, Harvard has 55). The Bulldogs also return all of their goalies, and all but one defenseman.

Yip-Chuck, a member of Calhoun College at Yale, attended All Saints and played for the Whitby Wolves prior to coming to Yale.

This was the 10th ECAC Hockey award of the season for a Yale player. The ECAC Hockey awards are determined by a vote of the league's coaches.
