STORRS, Conn. - UConn goaltender Kaitlyn Shain made 30 saves to help the Huskies beat Yale 3-0 in the second game of the Nutmeg Classic Saturday night at Freitas Ice Forum. The Huskies will host Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon in a game that will determine the tournament champion.
UConn (2-2-0) got a goal from Leslie Hurlburt 3:29 in and would go on to outshoot the Bulldogs 13-7 in the first period. A tripping penalty on Yale (0-1-1) enabled the Huskies to get another goal early in the second, as Kristen Russell tallied at 6:04 on the power play. UConn finished that period with a 12-5 shot edge.
The Bulldogs' offense woke up on the third period with 18 shots on goal - more than the other two periods combined - but Shain stopped each of them. Elizabeth Gallinaro's goal at 9:48 gave the Huskies more than enough breathing room.
Yale goaltender Sarah Love finished with 29 saves.
The Bulldogs travel to Cornell and Colgate next weekend.
On Tuesday night, Yale hosts an exhibition game between Team USA and the ECACHL Hockey League All-Stars at Ingalls Rink. Love, Deena Caplette and Kristin Savard are on the All-Star team, while Helen Resor is on Team USA. Tickets are complimentary for Yale students with ID.
