Bulldogs Battle #9 New Hampshire to 1-1 Tie

Nov. 16, 2003
Yale came back to tie #9 New Hampshire 1-1 at Ingalls Rink, getting 26 saves from goalie Sarah Love and a goal from Deena Caplette.
"Obviously you want to win, but this is definitely a step in the right direction," said Yale head coach Hilary Witt, whose Bulldogs are now 2-2-2. The tie comes on the heels of a close 3-1 loss at #5 Providence the day before. Yale was 1-5 at this point last season.
The Wildcats (4-2-2) struck first, on a power play at 16:05 of the first period. Nicole Hekle slipped one past Love off of assists from Kristen Thomas and Allison Edgar. Yale tied the game 10 seconds into the second period, as Caplette scored off a Natalie Babony assist.
"Deena Caplette's goal was just great hockey," Witt said. "She's playing incredibly right now."
The Wildcats outshot Yale 9-4 in the third period but could not get one past Love. Love wound up with third star honors, completing a weekend in which she made 68 saves.
"Sarah Love is our key," Witt noted. "We can't ask any more from her. She played great."
Witt also pointed to the play of Nicole Symington, who has just been switched to defense, and Erin Duggan, who got off five of Yale's 25 shots for the game. Caplette earned first star of the game honors for her work, while Hekle earned second star.
Yale returns to action next weekend at Vermont and at Dartmouth, with the Big Green currently ranked #2 in the country.
"I think our kids can pay with anybody," Love said. "Any time Sarah Love is on we have a chance."
