ERIE, Pa. - A string of five straight goals by No. 6/7 Mercyhurst broke open a 1-1 game and gave the Lakers a 6-2 win over Yale Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Valerie Chouinard scored twice for the Lakers, bringing her season total to 12, and Sherilyn Fraser added three assists. Yale's goals came from Maggie Westfal and Sarah Tittman.
Stephanie Bourbeau put Mercyhurst (8-6-1) up 1-0 at 18:12 of the first. That was the culmination of a busy period for the Laker offense, as Mercyhurst outshot Yale (3-6-2) 15-3 in the first. Westfal's power play goal at 3:01 of the second, assisted by Carlee Ness and Christina Sharun, knotted the score at one.
The Lakers responded with three unanswered goals over the rest of the period, including two by Chouinard and one by Stephanie Jones. They increased their lead to 5-1 on a Kristen Erickson goal at 3:29 of the third, and Shivon Zilis (six saves) then came on in relief of Sarah Love (23 saves). Ashley Pendleton got one past Zilis, and Tittman's goal with 59 seconds left (assisted by Kristin Savard and Crysti Howser) made the final 6-2.
Courtney Drennen made 22 saves for Mercyhurst.
Yale and the Lakers meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast by Mercyhurst on WMCE and televised on the Image Sports Network in the Erie area. Live stats will be available on Mercyhurst's website.
