NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's hockey team will be without the services of sophomore defenseman Helen Resor (Greenwich, Conn.) and head coach Hilary Witt this week, but it's for a good cause. They're with Team USA for the Four Nations Cup in Kitchener, Ont.
The Four Nations Cup includes the U.S., Canada, Finland and Sweden -- the top four teams at the past Olympics. The tournament runs from Nov. 7-11. The United States has earned either the gold or silver medal in each of the nine years it has competed in the Four Nations Cup (Three Nations Cup from 1996-99), including back-to-back silver medals in 2004 and 2005.
The Canada-U.S. game on Tues. Nov. 7 at 7:30 Eastern will be broadcast live on Canada's TSN. TSN will also broadcast the gold-medal game on Nov. 11 at 4:00 Eastern.
Resor is one of nine players with Olympic experience on the U.S. roster. She had two assists and tied Jenny Potter for the best +/- rating on the team (+10) during the Olympics, helping the U.S. to a bronze medal. She was also part of Team USA's gold-medal effort at the 2005 IIHF World Championship.
Resor has had a hand in six of Yale's 12 goals so far this season (one goal, five assists).
Witt, who will be making her international USA Hockey coaching debut as an assistant on head coach Mark Johnson's staff, is in her sixth season at Yale and fifth as head coach. The winningest coach in Yale history, Witt's 2004-05 squad set the school record for overall wins (16) and conference wins (12), and made an appearance in the ECACHL semifinals for the first time. Further, she was the ECACHL Women's Coach of the Year in 2002-03. In the last two years, Witt expanded her coaching experience to include USA Hockey Player Development Camps, as she coached at the Girls' Select 17/18 and 14 levels.
As a player, Witt spent time with the U.S. Women's National Team during the 2000-01 season and played on the 2000 U.S. Women's Select Team at the Four Nations Cup.
While Resor and Witt are away, Yale hosts Providence (Wed., 7:00 p.m.) and visits Brown (Sat., 7:00 p.m.).
