No. 6 Lakers Snap Yale Win Streak at Six, 4-1

Dec. 7, 2004

New Haven, CT - The No. 6 Mercyhurst Lakers (9-4-2) snapped Yale's six-game winning streak with a 4-1 win Tuesday night at Ingalls Rink. The No. 10 Bulldogs (9-4) fell behind 3-0 in the first period and were unable to get back in the game. Yale also saw its string of 36 straight penalty kills end on a power-play goal by Mercyhurst's Sara McDonald in the third period.

Samantha Shirley got the scoring started by tipping a shot from Sherilyn Fraser past Yale goalie Sarah Love (25 saves) at 8:40 of the first. Less than 2:30 later Chrissy Yule backhanded one past the Yale netminder, and at 15:47 Teresa Marchese increased the lead to 3-0.

That was more than enough for Lakers goaltender Laura Hosier, who was making just her second start of the season. Hosier finished with 17 saves, and made some key ones as Yale went scoreless on four power plays in the second period that could have brought the Bulldogs back into the game. McDonald's power-play tally at 9:09 put the game out of reach and ended Love's night, as Shivon Zilis came on in relief (5 saves). Jenna Spring wristed one past Hosier at 13:45 on the power play to break up the shutout.

"We just didn't come out to start the game well," said head coach Hilary Witt. "We have to play our type of game, get tighter D-zone coverage, and not let their physical play change our style of play."

The Bulldogs and Lakers meet again Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at Ingalls Rink. Tickets are available one hour prior to the game (cash only: Yale students with ID free, adult G.A. $3, non-Yale students 15 & over $1, youth 14 & under free, senior citizens 65 & over free).
