Campaign Starts with Visit from Crusaders Saturday
Bulldogs Open 35th Season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 35th season of varsity women's lacrosse at Yale opens Saturday, with the Bulldogs hosting Holy Cross at 3:30 p.m. at Reese Stadium (note time change due to inclement weather).
Yale beat the Crusaders 15-7 in Worcester last year, thanks in large part to an eight-assist day from senior attacker Jenna Block (Owings Mills, Md.). The Bulldogs started with a 6-2 lead that included the first career goals from sophomore attacker Caroline Crow (Davidson, Md.) and junior attacker Myra Trivellas (Chadds Ford, Pa.). After the Crusaders rallied to get within 6-5 eight minutes before halftime the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to close out the game. Yale held a 40-23 edge in shots.
Sophomore goalie Whitney Quackenbush (Manhasset, N.Y.), who made eight saves in last year's win over the Crusaders, returns to follow up on a season in which she earned second team All-Region and honorable mention All-Ivy League honors. Quackenbush had a .492 save percentage, third-best by a Yale freshman in 20 years. She anchors a defense that is led by the 2010 team captain, senior defender Claire Eliasberg (San Diego, Calif.).
Block (12-23-35) is Yale's top returning point scorer, while senior midfielder Jessica Sturgill (Ellicott City, Md.) (23-5-28) is the top returning goal scorer. Junior midfielder Ariana Papier (Rochester, N.Y.) (11-1-12) is third in scoring among the Bulldog returnees.
Holy Cross (0-2, 0-0 Patriot League) has opened the season with losses to Massachusetts and New Hampshire, two teams Yale will see later in the year. Attacker Ali Baird and midfielder Kat Sutton lead the Crusaders with three goals each. Sutton has a 14-game goal-scoring streak dating back to last season. Amy Martin has stopped 22 of 47 shots (.468).
The Crusaders' top returning goal scorers are attacker Megan Fenton, attacker Katie Gardner and midfielder Meg O'Leary, with 25 goals each.
