Bulldogs Seeking First Win
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team begins its "season within a season" Saturday, as No. 15 Dartmouth comes to Reese Stadium for the start of Ivy League play. At stake for both teams is the chance to gain an early lead in the race for the Ivy League championship. With the top four teams in the league making the Ivy tournament and getting a chance to win an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, Saturday's game also has implications for each team's postseason chances.
Yale (0-2, 0-0 Ivy League) last won the Ivy League in 2003, and last made it to the NCAAs in 2007. The Bulldogs had enjoyed a run of three straight wins against the Big Green recently, but Dartmouth has won the last two in the series. Last year in Hanover, the Bulldogs fell behind 11-1 before scoring four of the game's last five goals. Senior midfielder/defender Kaitlyn Flatley (Berwyn, Pa.) had a pair of goals, while junior attacker Caroline Crow (Davidsonville, Md.) had a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Whitney Quackenbush (Manhasset, N.Y.) made 12 saves.
Crow leads Yale with four goals through this season's first two games. Sophomore midfielder Devon Rhodes (E. Northport, N.Y.) has added a pair of goals and a team-high seven draw controls. She is tied for second in the league in the latter category.
Dartmouth (2-0, 0-0 Ivy League) finished second in the league last season with a 5-2 mark, trailing only Penn. The Big Green returns 21 letter winners and 10 starters from that team, and that experience has paid dividends early on. Dartmouth has an Ivy League-leading 11 assists on 19 goals, and eight different players have points. Attacker Greta Meyer leads the team in goals with six and points with nine. Attacker Kat Collins has added five goals. Dartmouth has also benefited from the play of a freshman, Kristen Giovanniello, in goal. She has stopped two-thirds of the shots she has faced, and is coming off a 15-save effort in the 10-6 win at Vermont.
The opening draw is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Reese Stadium. Admission is free.
