Bulldogs Start Spring Break in Harrisonburg, Va.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team is headed south for spring break, though this trip will not be a vacation. The Bulldogs visit No. 10 James Madison on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and to prepare for that game they are leaving New Haven on Monday. Of the teams on Yale's schedule, only No. 6 Georgetown and No. 8 Penn are more highly ranked than the Dukes.
Yale (0-3, 0-1 Ivy League) is coming off its best game of the season, as the Bulldogs nearly knocked off No. 15 Dartmouth Saturday at Reese Stadium. Freshman attacker Jen DeVito (Wading River, N.Y.) had a hat trick, and freshman midfielder Ashley McCormick (Paoli, Pa.) scored her first career goal. A pair of seniors, midfielder/defender Kaitlyn Flatley (Berwyn, Pa.) and attacker Myra Trivellas (Chadds Ford, Pa.), scored their first goals of the season.
The 9-8 final score Saturday represented a dramatic turnaround from Yale's game at Dartmouth last season, a 12-5 Big Green win. The Bulldogs will seek a similar year-to-year turnaround against JMU, having lost to the Dukes 10-4 at Reese Stadium last season. After a goal by sophomore midfielder Kelsea Smith (Yardley, Pa.) -- the first of her career -- pulled Yale within 5-4 with 19:52 to play, JMU reeled off the last five goals of the game to pull away. Junior goalie Whitney Quackenbush (Manhasset, N.Y.) made 13 saves, helping the Bulldogs stay within striking distance despite a 31-10 shot advantage for JMU.
JMU (3-0, 0-0 CAA) has scored in double digits in every game this season, and has outshot its opponents 94-55. The Dukes are led by seven goals from attacker Casey Ancarrow, a pre-season All-CAA and CAA Co-Player of the Year selection who is also a teammate of Yale assistant coach Jill Byers on the 2010-11 U.S. Lacrosse national team. Attacker/midfielder Monica Zabel's 11 assists lead the team, as do her 14 points. Defender Cally Chakrian, a preseason All-CAA selection, has a team-leading nine draw controls. Goalie Alex Menghetti has a .400 save percentage and an 8.00 goals-against average.
