Bulldogs Coming Off 19-12 Win at Quinnipiac
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off its best offensive day in five years, the Yale women's lacrosse team opens Ivy League play this Saturday with a game vs. No. 12 Dartmouth at Reese Stadium (1:00 p.m.).
Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) finished just six goals shy of tying the school record for goals in a game Wednesday, racking up 19 in a 19-12 win at Quinnipiac. Sophomore midfielder Cathryn Avallone (Manhasset, N.Y.) had the first eight-point day by a Yale player since 2010, scoring five goals and adding three assists. Senior attacker Devon Rhodes (E. Northport, N.Y.) -- who had been the last Yale player with an eight-point game, accomplishing that feat in a win over Harvard three years ago -- had six goals and an assist Wednesday. She now leads the team in goals with nine and is tied for the team lead in points (10) with junior attacker Jen DeVito (Wading River, N.Y.). DeVito has added five ground balls, the most of any field player.
Sophomore midfielder Christina Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J.) leads the team in draw controls with nine, while freshman midfielder Kelly Anne Sherlock (Huntington, N.Y.) is second with six. Yale's top four list in draw controls consists entirely of freshmen and sophomores.
Junior goalie Erin McMullan (Wading River, N.Y.) has a .333 save percentage along with a team-best six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Avallone and sophomore attacker Kerri Fleishhacker (Manhasset, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals last year at Dartmouth, a 9-8 win for the Big Green. After giving up the first three goals of the game, Yale rallied to tie the game 8-8 with 12:17 to play, but Dartmouth got the game-winner with 2:12 left.
Dartmouth (2-0, 0-0 Ivy League) has a pair of one-goal wins to start the season, winning 8-7 in overtime at Oregon to start the season and then topping New Hampshire 11-10 this past Thursday on a goal by midfielder Jaclyn Leto with 5.8 seconds left. Attacker Liz Calby assisted on that goal, and leads the team in goals (six) and points (nine). Attacker Hana Bowers leads the Big Green in draw controls with six and has added five goals and two assists. Goalie Kristen Giovanniello, a second team All-Northeast Region and second team All-Ivy League selection last year, has a .346 save percentage and an 8.10 goals-against average.
