  • Murray, Parchman Earn IWLCA Academic Honor Roll Recognition

    Murray, Parchman Earn IWLCA Academic Honor Roll Recognition Two members of the Yale women’s lacrosse team, Meghan Murray ’14 and Kallie Parchman ’14, were named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll on Tuesday. The Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who have achieved at least junior status academically and have a cumulative grade point average or 3.50 or greater. This is the second straight year that both Murray and Parchman have earned this honor.

    Yale Earns IWLCA Academic Squad Honors The Yale women's lacrosse team has earned IWLCA Academic Squad recognition for its work in the classroom. The IWLCA announced the award winners -- which included all eight Ivy League schools -- on Monday. This was the first time since 2008 that all eight Ivy teams earned the honor.

    Yale Honors Seven Seniors and One Team at Senior Student-Athlete Reception Seven seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The men’s fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Paige Decker (New Preston, Conn.) of the women’s ice hockey team, Jane Kozey (Ansonia, Conn.) of the women’s crew team and Beau Palin (Oconomowoc, Wisc.) of the football team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Tucker Kocher (San Francisco, Calif.) of the men’s soccer team and Brenda Seah (Singapore) of the women’s fencing team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Pat Killian (Nashville, Tenn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team and Kallie Parchman (Baltimore, Md.) of the women’s lacrosse team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

    Daniggelis Named Second Team All-Region Sophomore attacker Nicole Daniggelis (St. James, N.Y.) has been named second team All-Northeast Region by the IWLCA. The IWLCA announced the all-region teams on Monday, with 16 student-athletes earning first-team honors and 16 earning second-team honors in each of the four regions. This is the second year in a row that Daniggelis has earned second team all-region honors.

    Carney, McMullan and Tarver Honored with Team Awards After posting its best won-lost record since 2008, the Yale women's lacrosse team honored three players who played key roles in the team’s success. The team awards were announced at the team's season-ending luncheon Wednesday in the Kiphuth Trophy Room at Payne Whitney Gym -- and the theme was “defense” as two defenders and a goalkeeper were honored. Senior goalie Erin McMullan (Wading River, N.Y.) received the Bowditch Award as the team's most valuable player and senior defender Adrienne Tarver (Pikesville, Md.), Yale’s captain, received the Holgate Award for dedication. Additionally, sophomore defender Flannery Carney (Baltimore, Md.) won the Most Improved Player Award.

Sophomore attacker Nicole Daniggelis (St. James, N.Y.) was named first team All-Ivy League, while senior attacker Jen DeVito (Wading River, N.Y.) and senior defender Adrienne Tarver (Pikesville, Md.) earned second-team honors. Junior midfielder Christina Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J.) was named honorable mention All-Ivy. The four all-league selections are the most for Yale since the 2008 season.

    Season Ends on a High Note as Yale Beats Brown 9-8 Senior defender Adrienne Tarver, Yale’s captain, grabbed one final loose ball in the waning seconds of Yale’s game vs. Brown Friday night at Reese Stadium, and moments later leapt in the air in celebration as the final horn sounded and the Bulldogs held on for a 9-8 win. It was a fitting way for the season finale to end, as Tarver and the rest of the nine-member senior class depart with a victory that clinched three straight seasons with a better won-lost record than the previous season.

    Cornell Holds Off Yale, 8-7 A late comeback attempt by the Yale women’s lacrosse team came up short Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field, as Cornell held on for an 8-7 win over the Bulldogs. Junior midfielder Christina Doherty had six ground balls and five caused turnovers, junior midfielder Erin Magnuson had three goals and an assist, and senior goalkeeper Erin McMullan made 10 saves, but Cornell clinched a spot in the Ivy League tournament by topping the Bulldogs.

First, though, he had to contact Tony Reno, Yale’s Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football, with a special request. Gennaro had just found out from Be The Match® that he was a genetic match for a patient with a life-threatening illness in need of a marrow transplant. Gennaro would have to donate soon, and he wanted to check with his new boss before proceeding.

Now the Bulldogs head to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on one of the teams directly ahead of them in the standings -- Cornell -- Saturday afternoon. They trail the Big Red by one game for third place.

    Hot Start Gets Yale a 9-6 Win vs. Columbia on Senior Day The Yale women’s lacrosse team started all nine seniors Saturday against Columbia on Senior Day at Reese Stadium, and thanks in part to them the Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-2 lead. That provided more than enough of a cushion to withstand a late Columbia rally, as the Bulldogs came away with a 9-6 win that moved them within one game of the two teams tied for third place in the Ivy League standings with two games left.

McMullan, who has started 30 straight games in goal, has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of The Week twice this season. She has also been recognized for her community service. McMullan is this week's Total Mortgage Spotlight Athlete of the Week.

The Bulldogs are coming off a near-upset of No. 15 Stony Brook Wednesday. They scored more goals against the Seawolves -- who entered the day leading the nation in scoring defense at 4.58 goals per game -- than any team other than No. 4 Florida. Saturday starts with Senior Day ceremonies, as Yale pays tribute to the nine members of the Class of 2014.

    No. 15 Stony Brook Avoids Upset Bid by Yale, 11-9 The Yale women’s lacrosse team gave the top-ranked defense in the nation a run for its money Wednesday afternoon at Reese Stadium, but ultimately No. 15 Stony Brook edged the Bulldogs 11-9 on a pair of goals in the final 10:42. Yale was frustratingly close to the upset, including a Bulldog shot with two minutes to play that hit the crossbar and then fell just inches away from the goal line. Sophomore attacker Nicole Daniggelis led the Bulldogs with six goals, while junior midfielder Christina Doherty helped Yale’s defense stay nearly neck-and-neck with Stony Brook by causing six turnovers.

They are 5-2 at home, the team’s best home record since going 7-2 in 2008 (when the team’s home was Johnson Field, not Reese Stadium).

Junior midfielder Erin Magnuson led Yale with three goals, while junior midfielder Cathryn Avallone and freshman attacker Tess McEvoy had two each.

    Yale Visits Princeton Saturday The Yale women’s lacrosse team takes on the highest-scoring offense in the Ivy League this Saturday as the Bulldogs head to Princeton for a 1:00 p.m. game. The Tigers are averaging more than 13 goals per game -- but Yale can counter that with a defense that is ranked 10th in the nation, allowing 7.5 goals per game. At 7-3, the Bulldogs have their best record at the 10-game mark since starting the 2008 season with 7-3 as well.

    Bulldogs Play Ball Control to Earn 8-7 Win vs. Lehigh Battling the cold, rainy weather and a hot Lehigh goalie, the Yale women’s lacrosse team came away with an 8-7 win Sunday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, then held off a Mountain Hawks comeback thanks in large part to their ability to control the ball. In addition to winning 11 of 17 draw controls -- including 10 by sophomore attacker Nicole Daniggelis, who also scored six goals -- the Bulldogs committed only six turnovers. That was their best turnover total since committing just five turnovers in a 17-13 win vs. Harvard Apr. 3, 2010.

    Attack Bounces Back as Yale Beats Cal 17-6 The Yale attack came back in a big way Friday afternoon vs. Cal at Reese Stadium. After being limited to a season-low five goals in a 6-5 loss at BU Wednesday, the Bulldogs scored a season-high 17 times against the Golden Bears for a 17-6 win that snapped a three-game losing streak. The Bulldogs scored the final eight goals of the game to win going away.

Senior goalkeeper Erin McMullan made six saves, while senior attacker Jen DeVito and freshman attacker Tess McEvoy scored a pair of goals each.

    Harvard Beats Yale 11-8 After allowing two early goals to the Yale women’s lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field, Harvard clamped down defensively and went on a 9-4 run to go ahead 9-6 with 23:45 to play. While the Bulldogs did fight back with a pair of late goals to close to within 9-8 with 11:08 remaining, the Crimson shut Yale out the rest of the way and came away with an 11-8 victory.

    Perfect Start to Season Intact After 12-8 Win vs. Bryant The Yale women’s lacrosse team has only been playing Bryant for three years, but the series has already had some memorable games. After winning by one goal in each of the first two meetings, Yale found itself locked in another battle with Bryant on Wednesday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The game ultimately hinged on a free position goal by freshman attacker Tess McEvoy with 9:07 to play that broke an 8-8 tie -- the fourth tie of the game. Yale then scored three goals in the final minutes to put away a 12-8 victory that keeps the team’s record perfect, 4-0, to start the season.

    Eight Points, 14 Draw Controls for Daniggelis as Yale Wins 16-5 at SHU Bitterly cold temperatures at Campus Field did little to slow down the Yale women’s lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon at Sacred Heart, as eight different players scored goals and the Bulldogs came away with a 16-5 win. Sophomore attacker Nicole Daniggelis led the way for Yale with eight points, including six goals and two assists. She also finished with 14 draw controls -- one shy of her own Ivy League single-game record -- as the Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season.

    Season Outlook: Bulldogs Look to Continue Improving in 2014 The Yale women’s lacrosse team showed many signs of progress in 2013, as the Bulldogs posted their best win total in five years and increased their goals scored compared to the previous season by a whopping 23 percent. Yale also had its lowest goals-allowed total since 2010. All but two players from that team are back for 2014, and with the addition of 10 freshmen Yale figures to have the talent and depth to make even more improvements in 2014. The roster includes 11 players who made 11 or more starts last season, and nine seniors looking to end their careers on a high note.
