Bulldogs Look to Open on High Note
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team opens the 2014 season Saturday morning, hosting Holy Cross at Reese Stadium at 11:30 a.m. in the first of 10 regular season home games. The Crusaders were picked to finished fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll.
Yale is coming off a 2013 season that saw some significant improvements. The Bulldogs posted their best win total in five years and increased their goals scored compared to the previous season by 23 percent. Yale also had its lowest goals-allowed total since 2010.
All but one player who scored any goals last year returns for this season, and the roster includes 11 players who made 11 or more starts last year. The Bulldogs' top returning scorer is sophomore attacker Nicole Daniggelis (St. James, N.Y.), who was fifth in the Ivy League last year with 39 goals. An All-Northeast Region and first team All-Ivy League selection, Daniggelis set the Yale single-season record for draw controls with 76 -- six shy of the Ivy League record. She was also named to the Synapse Sports All-Rookie Team.
Senior attacker Jen DeVito (Wading River, N.Y.) tied for the team lead in assists and was third on the team in points last year (15-16-31). That was a career high in assists for her, and she tied her career high in goals. DeVito had four goals and an assist in Yale's game vs. Holy Cross last year.
Another player who set some career highs last year was junior midfielder Erin Magnuson (Northport, N.Y.), who finished fourth on the team in points (19-6-25). That represented career highs in all three of those categories for Magnuson, who more than tripled her point production from the previous season. She also finished second on the team in shooting percentage at .500, trailing only junior midfielder Cathryn Avallone (Manhasset, N.Y.) (.516).
Junior midfielder Christina Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J.) returns after leading Yale in ground balls (36) and caused turnovers (16) and finishing second in draw controls (35). Doherty had four ground balls and three draw controls last year vs. Holy Cross.
The Bulldogs return a trio of senior defenders who have combined for 108 career starts in their first three seasons: Kallie Parchman (Baltimore, Md.), Katherine Sherrill (New York, N.Y.) and Adrienne Tarver (Pikesville, Md.). Tarver, elected captain by her teammates, was second on the team in ground balls (26) and caused turnovers (12).
Starting goalie Erin McMullan (Wading River, N.Y.) also returns. McMullan was fourth in the Ivy League with 99 saves last year, posting a .381 save percentage and an 11.26 goals-against average.
Holy Cross (0-2, 0-0 Ivy League) edged Yale 16-13 in the Bulldogs' season opener last year, surrendering an early 8-4 lead but then scoring eight of the final 13 goals of the game after the Bulldogs had rallied to tie the score 8-8. The Crusaders fell to Bryant 8-7 in their season opener, and 12-6 at No. 11 UMass this past Wednesday.
Midfielder Laura Ryan, a second team All-Patriot League selection last year, leads the team in scoring (4-1-5) and also has a team-best seven draw controls. Goalie Sarah Weber has a .429 save percentage and a 9.52 goals-against average.
Defender Corinne Caracausa was a preseason All-Patriot League selection for the Crusaders. One of the team's captains, Caracausa was a second team All-Patriot League pick last year after grabbing 36 ground balls and 16 draw controls while ranking third on the team with 16 caused turnovers.
The Crusader roster features two names that are familiar to Yale women's lacrosse followers. Defender Christina Amendola is the sister of former Bulldog Adrianna Amendola, and midfielder/defender Catherine Rutter is the sister of Yale senior midfielder Courteney Rutter (Summit, N.J.).
