Bulldogs Rally for 13-11 Overtime Win Over Colgate

March 14, 2006
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Yale outscored Colgate 3-1 in overtime to pull out a 13-11 victory over the Raiders Tuesday night at the CSTV Spring Fling at Wellington's Village Park. The Bulldogs scored twice in the final 48 seconds of regulation to tie the game, knotting it up on Lauren Taylor's goal with 18 seconds remaining. Taylor Fragapane's goal with 4:36 left in overtime broke an 11-11 deadlock and proved to be the game-winner.
Taylor scored the first of her five goals on the night five minutes in, and Fragapane added one a minute later to give Yale a 2-0 lead. After Colgate rallied to tie the game, the Bulldogs reeled off three unanswered goals before halftime. All came on free position shots - one by Taylor, one by Fragapane and one by Tucker Marrison.
The teams traded goals twice at the start of the second half, with Taylor and Lara Melniker scoring for the Bulldogs. Colgate then went on a five-goal run to take a 9-7 lead with 5:36 to play.
After Melniker scored to stop the run, Megan Janson put the Raiders back ahead by two with 1:11 left in the game. But Melniker scored with 48 seconds left and Taylor got the game-tying goal 30 seconds later. Taylor's attempt at a game-winning shot at the buzzer hit the post.
Kat Peetz opened the scoring in overtime with a goal 48 seconds in, but Colgate's Ashley Didio responded 20 seconds after that. Fragapane's goal 16 seconds later gave Yale a 12-11 lead, and Taylor added an insurance goal with three minutes left.
Lonnie Sarnell made nine saves for the win in her first start of the season, while Colgate's Sue Bielamowicz had eight.
Katie Wiacek had four caused turnovers to lead Yale defensively.
Yale returns to New Haven to host Penn in its Ivy League opener Saturday at 1 p.m. at Johnson Field.
