NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale made its first game at Reese Stadium a successful one last week with a 7-4 win over UMass. The Bulldogs now face an even bigger test in their second home game, as No. 12 BU comes to town (Wednesday, 4:00 p.m., GameTracker). This is the second of three straight games against nationally ranked opponents for Yale.
The Bulldogs fell to the Terriers 10-7 last year, and BU went on to make its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. All-American midfielder Sarah Dalton, who leads the team in scoring this year (25-3-28), had four goals and an assist last year against Yale. Goalie Rachel Klein, a second team All-Region pick and former high school teammate of Yale senior midfielder Taylor Fragapane (Cockeysville, Md.) at Roland Park Country School, stopped six of 13 shots.
So far this season Klein has a .417 save percentage and a 12.08 goals-against average. She and the Terriers (3-3, 0-0 America East) have beaten George Mason, UMass and William & Mary but lost to three nationally ranked teams in No. 5 Penn, No. 6 Syracuse and No. 10 Vanderbilt.
Senior midfielder Jenn Warden (Edgemont, Pa.), who had a pair of goals last year against BU, leads Yale (2-4, 0-1 Ivy League) and is fourth in the Ivy League with 16 goals for the season. She leads the team in ground balls (15) and is second in draw controls (six) and caused turnovers (five). Junior defender Michele Fiorentino (Berwyn, Pa.) leads the team in caused turnovers with six.
Freshman goalkeeper Whitney Quackenbush (Manhasset, N.Y.) had her best game of the season last time at Reese, stopping 14 shots -- the most by a Yale goalie in two years. She followed that up with seven saves Saturday at No. 5 Penn, and at one point during the middle of the game Quackenbush and the Yale defense held the Quakers scoreless for 24:41. They must now try to contain a BU offense that has scored 14 or more goals four times in the first six games.
