Quackenbush and Warden Earn IWLCA All-Northeast Region Honors
May 29, 2009
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman goalkeeper Whitney Quackenbush (Manhasset, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Jenn Warden (Edgemont, Pa.) have been named second team IWLCA All-Northeast Region. This is Warden's third straight second-team All-Region selection, and Quackenbush is one of only four freshmen in the country to earn All-Region selection.
Warden led Yale in points (51), goals (43), ground balls (34), caused turnovers (31) and draw controls (29). A three-time second team All-Ivy League selection, she tied for third in the league in both overall goals (43) and goals in Ivy games (17) this year.
Warden scored at least one goal in every game this season and scored two or more goals in each of the last seven games. She finished sixth on Yale's career goals list (118), seventh on Yale's career points list (156) and tied for 11th on Yale's career assists list (38).
Warden, a history major in Saybrook College, received her B.A. from Yale this past Monday. Prior to Yale she attended Lawrenceville.
Quackenbush settled in as Yale's starting goalkeeper in the second game of the season. She finished 12th in the country in goals-against average (9.17) and 14th in save percentage (.492). That marked just the third time in the last 20 years Yale has had a freshman goalie register a save percentage that high.
Quackenbush and the Bulldogs ranked 13th in the country in scoring defense (9.19 goals allowed per game), and Yale held its opponent below its season goals-per-game average 14 times in 16 games. Quackenbush had six double-digit save games, including a season high of 14 in Yale's 7-4 win over UMass in the Bulldogs' first game at their new home, Reese Stadium.
An honorable mention All-Ivy League selection, Quackenbush was second in the league in save percentage and third in goals-against average. The only other freshmen to be honored with All-Region selection this year were midfielder Ally Carey of Vanderbilt (second team All-Midwest/West), goalkeeper Sarah Geary of Old Dominion (second team All-South) and attacker Alayna Markwordt (second team All-Midwest/West).
Prior to Yale Quackenbush attended Manhasset High. She is a member of Ezra Stiles College at Yale.
There were 16 first team and 16 second team selections in the Northeast Region, one of four regions nationwide.
