Bulldogs Set to Sail in Singlehanded New England Championships This Weekend
NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The No. 6 Bulldogs will get to exhibit their singlehanded skills in Laser Radials this weekend at the New England Singlehanded Championships. The championships are being hosted by Boston College at the Savin Hill Yacht Club in the Dorchester section of Boston Harbor.
Normally the Bulldogs compete in FJs and 420s, which involve a skipper and crew. This weekend four of the Bulldogs will be racing in the singlehanded Laser Radial which will leave them alone on the water. The top five finishers at the New England Championships qualify for Singlehanded Nationals which are being held on November 7th and 8th in Corpus Christi, Tex. These are some of the only opportunities for the sailors to demonstrate their singlehanded skills in college sailing.
Last year the Bulldogs had a strong showing at the Singlehanded New England Championships. Jane Macky ’09 finished fourth, Kate Hagemann ’09 finished sixth, senior Sarah Lihan finished seventh, and senior Rebecca Jackson finished 10th. Macky went on to finish third at Singlehanded Nationals.
This year’s singlehanded competition should be exciting for the Bulldogs. Lihan and Jackson will return to the championships accompanied by freshmen Claire Dennis and Emily Billing. Both Dennis and Billing will feel right at home as they grew up racing in Laser Radials. It will also be Lihan’s first college regatta of the 2009-2010 season as she recently returned from an international regatta in Weymouth, England. While in England she competed in the Laser Radial class, which was perfect preparation for this coming weekend.
The Bulldogs will spend the week recalling and perfecting their singlehanded skills before facing the best Laser Radial sailors in New England in Boston.
Racing will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
