No. 3 Bulldogs Set Sail to Charleston For First Regatta of the Spring Season

Bulldogs Head South to Compete and Train

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The No. 3 Bulldogs will shake the dust out of their sailing boots and head south to Charleston, S.C., for the Charleston Women’s Intersectional on March 6 and 7. It will be the first regatta of the spring season for the women’s team who last sailed in November at the Atlantic Coast Championships, where they finished third.

The Bulldogs have finished fourth at Charleston in each of the last two years. Last year , Kate Hagemann ’09 and junior Elizabeth Brim finished fourth in A division while senior Sarah Lihan and junior Tatyana Camejo finished fourth in B division.

The Bulldogs will face tough competition as seven of the top-15 teams in the country including No. 2 Charleston will descend on Charleston Harbor, which is known for its current. They will compete in 420s, which are the boats they spend the majority of practice time in at the McNay Family Sailing Center.

While the Bulldogs will have to rid their sailing brains of the cobwebs that have accrued over the winter, the regatta will allow the Bulldogs to get a look at some of the top teams as they begin the defense of their National title. Many of the teams they will face have the advantage of living in warmer climates that makes early season practice possible. Due to the cool temperatures and numerous days of precipitation this February, the Bulldogs were unable to get out on the water in Branford.

Following the weekend regatta, the Bulldogs will be joined by the rest of their teammates for a week of spring break training. The entire team will have a chance to sail against the College of Charleston, as well as Georgetown who is also training in Charleston for the week and get their sea legs fully back under them.

The Bulldogs will push off the docks at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, beginning their journey to Wisconsin and the National Championships in May.
