US Sailing Development Team and US Sailing Team Alphagraphic Both Possess Plenty of Bulldog Bite

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—US Sailing recently announced the 2010 US Sailing Development Team (USSDT) and the 2010 US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG). Three alumni and one current Yale undergrad were named to the USSTAG, while the USSDT boasts four Yale undergraduates as well as two recruits for the class of 2014, ensuring that international waters will continue to be dotted with Yale blue.

The US Development team has 48 young athletes who are supported in their quest to qualify someday for the Olympics. The athletes are sponsored and given coaching, as well as access to trainers, nutritionists, and physical therapists. This is the first year that team has been expanded to include classes other than the Laser and the Laser Radial.

Freshman Claire Dennis and senior Sarah Lihan were named to the US Sailing Development team in the Laser Radial division. Both sailors have shown their prowess in this singlehanded boat both internationally and in college. Just this past fall, Dennis and Lihan competed in the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships finishing second and fourth respectively.

Sophomore and coed captain Joseph Morris was named to the development team in the 470 class with his crew Willie McBride of the University of California, Berkley. Morris and McBride have had a successful campaign in the 470 after graduating to the boat from the 420. Most recently, they competed at the Miami Olympic Class Regatta in January.

The fourth Bulldog named to the development team is Cameron Cullman in the Laser division. Cullman has competed successfully nationally and internationally. During the 2008-2009 college season, he narrowly missed qualifying for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships, having to compete against most of the top singlehanded college sailors in the country at the New England Championships.

Two of the recruits for the class of 2014, Christopher Segerblom of Costa Mesa, Calif. and Marlena Fauer of New York, N.Y., were also named to the US Development team. They will both be great additions to the competitive tradition that the Bulldogs hold dear.

The US Sailing Team Alphagraphics is the national team composed of the Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls. The top two boats in each Olympic class are selected for the team.

After being named to the USSDT, Dennis was upgraded to the USSTAG based on her impressive sixth-place finish at the Miami Olympic Class Regatta in January.

The three alumni named to the USSTAG—Stu McNay ’05, Molly Carapiet ’06 and Isabelle Kinsolving Farrar ’02—were all extremely successful college sailors and have moved on to become prominent in international sailing. Carapiet was a three-time All-American while at Yale. McNay, a two time All-American, competed for the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. All three alums were named to the team in the 470 class.

Clearly, the success that the Bulldogs have in college sailing continues on after they have left the confines of New Haven. With four current undergrads named to at least one of the teams, the future promises to be bright for Yale sailors on the international sailing circuit.
