No. 3 Bulldogs’ Final Weekend to Prepare for Nationals Qualifier

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With the Women's New England Championship less than 10 days away, the No. 3 Yale women's sailing team has one final regular season regatta before the points really begin to matter.  That last opportunity to work the kinks out is this weekend at the Emily Wick Trophy which will be hosted this weekend by the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.  After a dominant victory at last weekend's interconference regatta, the Bulldogs are looking to add to their momentum as they sail into the post-season.

The spring must officially be upon us because weather forecasts are calling for temperatures to break into the low- to mid-60s and for there to be 12-15 knots of wind from the southwest all weekend.

Representing the Bulldogs in A division at the Wick Trophy will be junior skipper Claire Dennis and senior crew Margot Benedict.  Last Sunday, during their weekend off from competition, these two upperclassmen drove to New London to practice on the Thames against local sailors from the Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College.  Dennis reported that the practice day was "extremely productive," which bodes well for the team's sense of preparation going into this weekend's racing.

Junior skipper Emily Billing and sophomore crew Amanda Salvesen will be sailing Yale's B division boat at the regatta.  A few weeks ago at the Navy Women's Interconference Regatta, this duo won B division by an impressive 26 points.  They will be looking to perform similarly this weekend.

Much of the competition that will be present at the New England Championship next weekend will be on the starting line at the Wick Trophy.  The New England district is arguably the most competitive district in collegiate sailing and therefore one of the most difficult districts to qualify for the nationals from.  The Bulldogs' No. 3 national ranking definitely favors them to qualify at next weekend's event, but a strong finish this weekend is important for the team's momentum.
