Fall Championship Qualifier This Weekend
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 1 Yale women's sailing team will race at the Victoria Urn Trophy this weekend in New London, Conn. This regatta serves as the New England district's qualifier for the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship. Teams that finish top seven at the Urn will return to New London on the second weekend of November to race against the top 18 schools from up and down the eastern seaboard.
The Bulldogs are the defending Women's Atlantic Coast Champions and their results this season bode well for their ability to qualify for the championship again this year. After seven weeks of competition, the Bulldogs have yet to finish outside of the top three. They have also been ranked No. 1 in the country all season long.
The same Bulldogs that sailed to a second-place finish at the nationals last spring will represent Yale at the regatta this weekend. Juniors Marlena Fauer and Eugenia Custo Greig will race in A division while sophomores Morgan Kiss and Urska Kosir race in B division.
Weather forecasts for the weekend call for southeast winds at five to 15 miles per hour on Saturday and northeast winds at 15 to 20 miles per hour on Sunday. The windier forecast on Sunday is likely due to the approaching hurricane which is predicted to hit southern New England as a tropical storm early next week.
There will be two weeks left in the women's sailing team's season if the Bulldogs finish in the top seven this weekend. Next weekend seniors Claire Dennis and Emily Billing will race at the women's singlehanded nationals in Long Beach , Calif., and the Atlantic Coast Championship will take place on the weekend after that.
