NEW HAVEN, CONN. – This is a big weekend for the Bulldogs, who will be competing at the NEISA Women's Championship/Reed Trophy hosted by the Coast Guard Academy. This event is a qualifier for the college sailing national semi-finals held in late May. Being in season since late February, the Bulldogs are well prepared for this event and working on finalizing starts and racing strategy at practice this week. The Bulldogs placed third at this event last year and are hoping to improve their result. With many of the best college sailing teams being located in the New England region, this will be a level of competition that is almost as competitive as nationals.
Sailing for the Bulldogs in A division will be senior skipper Casey Klingler with first-year crew Claudia Loiacono. Sophomore skipper Louisa Nordstrom and sophomore crew Graceann Nicolosi will be competing in B division. Senior crew Claire Huebner may also be sailing as well if it is windy over the weekend. Klingler and Nordstrom were named on the watch list for NEISA skipper of the year and Loiacono for crew of the year. These awards as well as first team and second team NEISA skippers and crews will be announced at the end of racing.
The forecast looks great for sailing, with sunny skies and winds out of the northwest on Saturday at 9-15 mph. Sunday's conditions look a bit lighter, with a northwesterly breeze shifting to a southwesterly breeze at 7-10mph. Current could play a large effect making racing tricky on the Thames River.
Racing will begin at 10:30am EST on Saturday and score can be followed live at https://scores.collegesailing.org/s18/neisa-women-reed/.
