No. 4 Bulldogs Win Women's Man-Labs Trophy Regatta
Sept. 14, 2008
MEDFORD, Mass. - The women's sailing team opened the fall sailing season with two strong performances at one day sailing events in the Boston area on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the No. 4 Bulldogs won the Women's Man-Labs Trophy hosted by MIT in Cambridge, Mass. while the team placed third on Sunday at the Captain's Cup hosted by Tufts in Medford, Mass.
On Saturday, the team experienced very light winds of zero to four knots at MIT's Charles River venue. Only four races were sailed in both A and B Divisions due to the extremely light wind conditions, with A Division starting in FJs for the first three races and then switching into MIT's unique Tech dinghy for the final race of the day. B Division started out in Techs and then switched into the FJs.
In B Division, junior Sarah Lihan sailed to a second-place finish with 14 points alongside sophomore crew Tatyana Camejo. The duo had three top-four finishes in the 16 team event, including a win in the final race of the day.
On Sunday, the women's team traveled to the Captain's Cup hosted by Tufts on Mystic Lake in Larks and placed third with 76 points over eight races in each division. In contrast to the light breeze on Saturday that prevented a large number of races from being completed, Sunday featured breezy conditions with rain.
In B Division, Lihan and Camejo built on their strong performance from Saturday to again place second with 26 points. The duo only finished outside of the top-five competitors once and won the fifth race of the event.
Overall, the team felt that the event was a good way to start off the fall season.
"I was pretty happy with the way that I sailed this weekend," Lihan explained. "The conditions were difficult on Saturday, but I was able to stay focused on the racing. It's fun and nice to get back into the routine of traveling every weekend and I think the women's team is excited to get racing underway."
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday and Sunday at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth.
