NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Marla Menninger, 2008 Intercollegiate Sailing Association All-American Crew, has been selected as captain of the 2009 Yale women's sailing team.
Menninger, a junior from Newport Beach, Calif., has played an integral role in the success of the women's sailing team since her freshman year alongside skipper and teammate senior Jane Macky. Standout performances include first place overall at the 2007 Atlantic Coast Championships, first place in A division and third place overall at the 2008 ICSA Women's National Championships and third place overall at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Championship.
Menninger led the team efforts to run regattas and manage the fleet and facilities as the commodore at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club in Branford, Conn., for the 2008 season, so her selection as captain represents a shift in leadership responsibilities. Menninger is looking forward to the new relationship with the team.
"I think my biggest challenge will be adjusting to the new position," Menninger said. "Kate Hagemann, the previous women's captain, did a great job balancing all of her responsibilities and being on top of everything while keeping things fun."
Coach Zachary Leonard '89, McNay Family Director of Yale Sailing, is also confident about Menninger's transition into the captain position.
"Marla has been the club commodore for the past year so she is a proven team leader who has always put the team before herself," Leonard said. "I think she will make the transition to captain seamlessly."
Menninger already has her head in the game and is optimistic about the coming season.
"I think we're in a great position going in to the spring season," Menninger said. "We are currently ranked third nationally behind Georgetown and College of Charleston, but we have consistently defeated those teams in the past. Our goal is to win nationals this spring, and we will be working hard at practice to accomplish this goal."
The first regatta of the 2009 season is the Charleston Women's Intersectional held on Mar. 6-7 in Charleston, S.C. Hagemann, junior Sarah Lihan and sophomores Elizabeth Brim and Tatyana Camejo will represent the Bulldogs at this event.
