No. 2 Sailing Team Wins Major Intersectional Regatta

April 5, 2009

CRANSTON, R.I. - The No. 2 Bulldog women's sailing team dominated at the Women's Brad Dellenbaugh Trophy hosted by Brown University over the weekend, bringing home first place in this competitive intersectional regatta. Opposition included some of the best competition in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association district, including four of the top 10 nationally ranked women's sailing teams. The Bulldogs placed in the top five of 22 of the 28 races sailed over the weekend.

The regatta, hosted by Brown University and the Edgewood Yacht Club on Narragansett Bay in Cranston, R.I., was sailed in a fleet of 420s. A division completed eight races and B division completed six races on Saturday in cloudy and windy conditions with west winds between ten to twenty knots and some higher gusts and big shifts. A division completed 6 races on Sunday while B division completed 8 to cap off a fourteen-race regatta; a lot of races in physically challenging conditions. Sunday featured sun with breeze from the west-north-west at ten to twenty knots, puffs to twenty-five knots, big wind shears and radical shifts.

Despite the shifty and unpredictable heavy breeze the Bulldogs demonstrated superior fitness and skill to win the regatta. Yale started off Saturday on a strong note with three first-place finishes and a second-place finish in the first four races of the regatta. Despite early domination, Yale fought off tough opposition from home team No. 8 Brown. The regatta featured much drama among the top few teams; entering the last race of the regatta Yale was in the lead by only three points, but managed to bring home the victory with a second place finish to Brown's seventh. Yale won with a second place in A Division and first place in B Division with 119 points overall. No. 8 Brown finished second with 127 points and No. 5 Boston College finished third with 158 points.

The Bulldogs showed superior depth, determination and fitness in both divisions despite raw and miserable conditions. On Saturday senior Jane Macky sailed with junior and heavy breeze expert Rebecca Jackson while captain junior Marla Menninger crewed for junior Sarah Lihan in B Division. On Sunday the Menninger-Macky duo was back in action in A division while Jackson crewed for Lihan in B division.

The Bulldogs' next competition is at the President's Trophy on the Charles River on Apr. 11-12.
