NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After playing its last three games on the road, including two against nationally ranked opponents, the Yale women's soccer team is anxious to get back to the friendly confines of Reese Stadium. It happens this weekend when the Bulldogs host Sacred Heart on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Syracuse on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The grueling early-season schedule may have taken its toll in Wednesday's loss to fourth-ranked Boston College. The Eagles, one of the highest scoring teams in the nation, capitalized on every Yale mistake en route to a 7-0 victory. The Bulldogs have only the two games this weekend to correct those errors before they open Ivy League play on Sept. 25 against Princeton.
Sacred Heart (4-2-1) is coming off a 4-2 win over Rider on Sept. 12. Nine of the Pioneers' 16 goals have come from two players. Lucy Gildein, who was named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday, leads the team with five goals, while Samantha Kee has four.
Yale is 8-0 all-time against Sacred Heart, including a 7-0 victory last year. Becky Brown scored three times to lead the Bulldogs. It was also a memorable night for Lauren Mathy and Anne Song, who both scored their first career goals.
Syracuse (3-3-2) plays its Big East opener on Friday against St. John's. Megan Bellingham leads the team with nine points, while Brielle Heitman has a team-best four goals.
Yale and Syracuse are playing for the first time.
