Bulldogs End Season On 5-1-1 Streak
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Enma Mullo made the most of her last game in a Yale uniform. Mullo scored the only goal of the game late in the first half as the Bulldogs closed out the season with an impressive 1-0 victory over Brown on a chilly afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Yale ends the year with a 9-5-3 overall record and a 4-2-1 Ivy League mark. The Bulldogs were 5-1-1 in their last seven games and now have finished with a winning overall record in nine of the last 10 years.
"It was certainly a good way to end," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "With all the injuries we had, I would chalk it up as a successful season."
Mullo's winning goal came when she took a through ball from Melissa Gavin near midfield, split three defenders, raced into the box and fired a shot into the top right corner at 39:30. It was Mullo's team-leading eighth goal of the season and the 13th of her career.
"Enma has been a great offensive threat for the last few seasons," Meredith said. "She has tremendous passion for the game, which brings energy to the entire team."
Mullo and Miyuki Hino, Yale's only seniors, were honored prior to kickoff. Hino, the team captain, missed the entire season with an injury.
"Miyuki has provided outstanding leadership," Meredith said. "My hats off to her. It takes a unique individual to lead without being on the field."
After Yale grabbed the lead, Brown (10-5-2, 3-3-1 Ivy) had the better of the play the rest of the way but couldn't get the equalizer. Yale goalkeeper Elise Wilcox made eight of her 10 saves in the second half. Her best stop came early in the second half when she dove to her right to deny Chloe Cross.
The shutout was Yale's seventh of the season.
With Mullo and Hino the only graduation losses, the future looks very bright for the Bulldogs.
"With the offense we have coming back and two good goalies returning, I'm pretty excited for next season," Meredith said.
