Gavin Scores 10th Goal Of Season For Yale
NEW YORK – As has been the case throughout the season, Columbia was very efficient Saturday against Yale. The Lions had 16 shots but scored on three of them en route to a 3-1 victory at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
Melissa Gavin scored for the Bulldogs, her team leading 10th of the season.
The game was scoreless until late in the first half when Columbia's Alexa Yow was taken down in the box. Chelsea Ryan then converted the penalty kick.
The Lions (8-5-3, 1-3-2 Ivy) scored again just 1:10 into the second half when Beverly Leon streaked down the left side and slipped a shot inside the post.
Phoenetia scored the final Columbia goal on a blast from the left side at 61:22.
Gavin's goal came on a penalty kick after a foul was called in the box.
The loss snapped Yale's three-game unbeaten streak. The Bulldogs are now 7-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Ivy play.
Columbia finished with a 16-12 edge in shots.
Goalkeeper Elise Wilcox made four saves for the Bulldogs.
Yale closes out the season with a pair of games against Brown next weekend. Friday is the Ivy game at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium. The two teams play again in Providence on Sunday in a game that won't count in the Ivy standings.
