No. 12 Duke Edges Yale 1-0 In Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The first ever meeting between Yale and Duke turned out to be a thriller. Darby Kroyer scored the only goal of the game at 37:36 as No. 12 Duke edged the Bulldogs 1-0 on the opening day of the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field.

Kroyer settled Carmen Bognanno's indirect kick and scored from six yards out.

Yale, which was playing its season opener, had chances to tie but couldn't capitalize. A Christina Huang shot sailed high in the 79th minute. The Bulldogs also had a corner kick in the final seconds.

Chloe Beizer started in goal for the Bulldogs, played the first half and made two saves. Susan Starr played the second half and stopped five shots.

Duke, which was playing its third game of the season, outshot Yale 17-4. The Blue Devils are 2-0-1.

Yale had four newcomers in its starting lineup - freshmen Hayley Zevenbergen, Natasha Mann and Crysti Howser and sophomore Mary Kuder, who transferred to Yale from the University of Portland.

The Bulldogs play second-ranked North Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels defeated Davidson 6-0 in the first game of the night.
